More than a half of slum dwellers are illiterate. For them, education is a distant luxury. The main reason why the parents are not sending their children to school is lack of finances for the school-related expenses. That is why Chalantika center is making the education accessible for those who cannot afford it.

Children often work since early age and support family budget. Beside education, Chalantika center provides its little visitors the opportunity to be children – enjoy games and the company of their peers.

Education for children

Beside common classes such as Bengali, English or Mathematics, children learn about health and hygiene issues and nutrition. Cooks in Chalantika Center prepare a hot lunch every day for all the children.

Once children are admitted to elementary school, they keep going to the Center for tutoring and assistance with their homework. The teachers and social workers in the Center keep an eye on their school results and provide motivation both the children and their parents to regular school attendance. Without this support, only few finish elementary education.

Investment into education is a very effective way to reduce poverty. It enables the children and their families to step out from the slum one day, to find employment that sustains themselves and their future families and to live a life where they can make their own decisions.

Education for parents

Important factor of illiteracy in Bangladesh is that it is common that children often work instead of going to school. That is why it is important to work also with parents, who can influence the child´s future. Families are regularly visited by social worker from Chalantika center.

Parents can attend literacy and sewing courses in the Center. This makes their qualification better and enlarges their possibilities to make a living.

Cooking workshops were held to teach women how to prepare nutritious meals from local ingredients. Once a month, workshops on various relevant issues such as health, hygiene, illness prevention, women and child rights are organized even for wider slum community.

Life in a slum

Slums are quarters in cities where the poorest people live - those who do not have money for a more dignified housing. In Bangladesh, the slums usually consist of simple shelters made from bamboo, pieces of metal or plastic foils, where the whole family lives in several square metres. Chalantika is not a single slum in Dhaka – it is one of five thousands of them, which are found in Dhaka only.

To give you more specific idea what living in a slum looks like, here is a short story of Sajib, a boy from Chalantika slum. Almost two years ago, going to school was something very far away. You can see him in a music video in Chalantika in 2015 from a successful campaign of Czech hip-hop band called Pio Squad. Find more here.
